Energy sector targets nearly 23,000 for local employment

For 2022, the target of local employment in the energy sector is 22,900, an increase of 3,300 compared to the target in 2021. The energy sector provided 19,050 employment opportunities for locals last year.

In addition, in-country value in the oil and gas sector accounted for 60 per cent of total expenditure, equivalent to USD1.79 billion.

Minister of Energy Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein said this at the sixth day of the 18th Legislative Council (LegCo) Meeting yesterday.

The Ministry of Energy will prioritise in expanding employment opportunities for locals.

On local content spending, the ministry and DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) are working closely in developing an Energy Incubation Centre at Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK).

The initiative aims to be a platform to foster a growth mindset for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the energy sector. The target for domestic expenditure for 2022 is estimated at BND1.9 billion.

The Ministry of Energy will continue to take advantage of local value development opportunities not only in the oil and gas sector, but also in the electric power sector by

drafting local business development directives specific to this sector.

To increase the capacity of local companies, the ministry is the leader of the i-Entrepreneur programme in the energy sector and created employment opportunities for 317 locals and with a total contract value of BND30 million.

The youth entrepreneurs who participated in the programme have shown commitment and ability, as well as strong competitive spirit, some of whom have secured contracts outside the programme.
