Top Workplaces in 2022 have something in common: culture and respect

Some industry factors are outside the control of a company or its leadership. Take, for instance, the fact that mortgage interest rates are still exceptionally low, and there’s great demand in the housing market. That bodes well for a real estate firm like Keller Williams Indy Metro.

But dig a little deeper, and you find even within an industry there are winners and losers. The same factors that make a place like Keller Williams a Top Workplace eight years in a row, also bode well for retention and recruitment. During the “Great Resignation,” which saw record numbers of workers leave their jobs and industries starting in 2021, the company’s Central Indiana contingent grew from 848 employees in the fall of 2020, to 1,067 a year later.

That happened at a time when employee loyalty nationwide and in Central Indiana dropped more than any other single factor measured, says Bob Helbig, media partnerships director for Energage, which surveys employees for Top Workplaces.

In the latest Top Workplaces survey, about 62% of responding Central Indiana employees affirmed they’d not considered searching for a better job in the past month. But that was down from nearly 68% who reported the same just a year ago.

This sharp dip came after loyalty peaked around the start of the pandemic — with all the volatility — when it seemed people were just happy to have a job. “People really dug in in the spring of 2020 and throughout 2020,” Helbig said.
